A series of episodes based upon the life of a wolf pack are the basis of this composition. The accompaniment is aggressive, atonal, rhythmic, and percussive. Challenges for the soloist include frequent meter changes, disjunct angular atonal melodic patterns, and rapid interval leaps. The work is brought to a close by a lengthy solo cadenza that begins in a wild and frenzied fashion, but ends quietly and rather eerily, as the soloist uses half-valve glissandos to imitate the howling of a wolf. The tone-painting and “atmosphere” created by this composition is truly remarkable and sure to be moving for those who have an appreciation for nature, in particular for those with a love of the frozen North and its inhabitants.
