This tongue-in-cheek tribute to old-time cornet solos of 100 years ago features three variations on the patriotic tune Yankee Doodle. In addition to the well-known theme, other tunes are quoted. The fife tune heard in the opening and closing bars is the Civil War era song, “The Girl I Left Behind Me”. Also included are the classical music favorites “The Erl-King by Franz Schubert and the “Ride of the Valkyries” by Richard Wagner. The composer, Neal Corwell, performed all the instruments heard within the CD accompaniment to include keyboards, cornet, trombone, duck calls, and cowboy boots! (The boots were used for the foot-stomping rhythm heard in the middle of variation one.)
The soloist is given the option of using a home-made instrument (consisting of two plastic pipes, and played like a trombone) for the opening and closing bars, and the middle blues-like variation may be made even more entertaining through the optional use of a plunger-like mute (a large bowl or hat is suggested). The concluding variation is reminiscent of the finales of the famous variations on
Carnival of Venice by Arban and Clarke.
Wide interval leaps and triple-tonguing head the list of technical difficulties the euphonium soloist encounters during this little adventure. Although originally for solo with pre-recorded accompaniment, a band accompanied version is available, as is a version with brass quartet accompaniment.
