This tongue-in-cheek tribute to old-time cornet solos of 100 years ago features three variations on the patriotic tune Yankee Doodle. The CD accompaniment includes humorous acoustically generated sound effects such as duck calls and tap dancing, plus other more conventional instruments. The soloist is given the option of using a home-made instrument (comprised of two plastic pipes, and played like a trombone) for the opening and closing bars, and the middle blues-like variation may be made even more entertaining through the optional use of a plunger-like mute (a large plastic bowl is suggested). Wide interval leaps and triple-tonguing head the list of technical difficulties. The concluding variation is reminiscent of the finales of the famous variations on Carnival of Venice by Arban and Clarke.
