TO PURCHASE

This composition is based upon the famous
Solvejg's Song from Edvard Grieg's incidental music to Peer Gynt, a play by Ibsen. Although the composer/arranger tampers only slightly with the basic melody and harmony of Grieg’s song, the form has been altered substantially through the addition of a prologue, an epilogue, and two additional transitional passages. Both transitions are based upon thematic material found within the song, and all added sections, to include the prologue and epilogue, are rhythmically free. Additional material is also presented during the second verse as the soloist is given a mildly virtuosic original countermelody to compliment the synthesizer’s statement of the melodic line.

The accompaniment is mostly quiet and ethereal. Only synthesizers are used, and sounds were chosen for their effectiveness in retaining the beautiful but bittersweet atmosphere created by Grieg in his orchestral version of the song.

When preparing
Solvejg's' Song Fantasy for performance, it is recommended that the artist become acquainted with both the music and text of the original song. The introduction and epilogue may be played muted if the soloist desires. The most technically challenging portion is the countermelody added to the second full statement of the song. It includes some slurred and single-tongued sextuplets, plus ascending arpeggios, all at a moderate tempo.
