The Andante and Rondo are extracted from a concerto for string bass by the highly regarded Italian composer Guiseppe Antonio Capuzzi, a contemporary of Mozart. It is believed that Capuzzi penned the work during a 1796 stay in London.
This arrangement by Neal Corwell, for brass solo accompanied by brass quintet, is modeled closely on the piano-accompanied version Philip Catelinet created in 1967, a version made popular by its inclusion on Brian Bowman’s first solo euphonium recording.
This new version, which blends elements of both Capuzzi’s original and Catelinet’s arrangement, provides the soloist with yet another accompaniment option.
The impetus behind the creation of this arrangement was the invitation to Dr. Corwell to be featured euphonium soloist with the Capitol Brass Quintet during their 2018 Veteran’s Day concert. Neal created brass quintet accompanied versions of both the Andante & Rondo and Endearing Young Charms especially for this occasion. In addition, he also arranged the Scherzo of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony for a brass sextet consisting of a standard brass quintet plus euphonium as the sixth voice of the ensemble.
