This song, by the famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, is cheerful and jaunty in character. The singer is a young maiden and she is telling the listener about a young man, Johann, who is trying to win her affections by bringing her flowers. Along with the words, there is a lot of “tra-la-la-ing” going on!
My Johann offers only modest technical challenges for the soloist, in the form of diatonic sixteenth-note patterns at a moderate tempo. This is an excellent contest piece for young players, and a good addition to the recital performance repertoire for anyone, be they amateur or professional.
This arrangement was originally published in 1988 by Kendor Music and was included on many state solo and ensemble lists during ensuing years. When it went permanently out of print 25 years later, Dr. Corwell re-obtained the rights to his arrangement so he could make it available through Nicolai Music.
